Services at the Duke Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) Clinic
rTMS stands for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. The non-invasive, outpatient procedure uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain.
During your first visit, you will meet with a psychiatrist who will review your medical and psychiatric history, discuss the risks and benefits of rTMS, and determine if rTMS is right for you. Other interventional psychiatry treatment options will also be discussed.
rTMS treatment involves daily sessions over several weeks or multiple sessions in a day over a shorter time period. Treatments take place in the provider’s office. They do not require anesthesia or surgery. You will be awake during treatment and can resume your normal activities immediately following each session.
The vast majority of people tolerate rTMS well.
