Pediatric Liver Transplant Team
You and your child will work with a team of specialists who support you and your family throughout the liver transplant journey.
Liver transplant surgery is performed at Duke Children's Hospital and Health Center. Pre- and post-transplant appointments take place at our liver transplant clinic within Duke Children's.
Infectious Disease Specialist
This doctor, who has specialized training in transplants, will help your child avoid infections and will monitor for and treat any infections that occur. They will make sure that your child is current on vaccinations before transplantation.
Social Worker
Your family will be assigned a social worker to help you cope with the effects of transplantation. They provide your child and your family with an additional level of care and guidance when you need emotional support or when you need help managing financial concerns.
Financial Coordinator
This individual works with your insurance company to help manage transplant-related health bills. They will explain your child’s insurance coverage and costs for post-transplant medicines and clinic visits.

Anesthesiologist or Nurse Anesthetist
An anesthesiologist who specializes in transplant will talk to you about the anesthesia your child will receive for their transplant operation and will care for them during the transplant surgery.
Professional Resource Manager
This team member helps to set up services after transplant and checks with your insurance provider regarding coverage and benefits.
Other Team Members
Our pediatric nurse practitioners, nurses, nursing care assistants, physical therapists, dietitians, pharmacists, and child life specialists all have advanced education in caring for children undergoing transplantation. Our pharmacists and dietitians work specifically with pediatric liver transplant patients. Our team’s goal is to achieve the best possible outcome for your child.
You and Your Family
You and your family are an integral part of the team that will care for your child before and after transplant. The family can also provide invaluable information on your child’s health and well-being outside of the hospital.
