Interventional Radiologists in Durham
Duke interventional radiologists specialize in minimally invasive procedures that historically required major surgery. They use imaging tools such as ultrasound, CT, MRI, and fluoroscopy to guide the insertion of a catheter and tiny devices through a small incision. Once inside the body, the interventional radiologist may perform a procedure that either destroys cancer cells, delivers medication, augments bone, places a device to open blood vessels, or reduces blood flow. Because the procedure is performed through a small incision, you may experience less pain, and recover faster.
If you experience a condition that may benefit from a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure, you will be seen at this clinic by an interventional radiologist. He or she will conduct a thorough evaluation to determine if you are a candidate. The procedure is performed in a specially equipped interventional suite in Duke University Hospital.
Interventional Radiology Procedures
The following lists examples of the types of procedures performed by Duke interventional radiologists. You may be seen at this clinic for a condition or interventional radiology treatment not listed here.
Ablation
There are many types of ablation. Essentially, they use heat, cold, or electricity to destroy cells using a needle. Ablation may be used to treat many types of benign growths as well as both primary and metastatic cancer.
Embolization
This procedure can deliver chemotherapy or radiation to treat several types of cancer. It may also be performed to prevent blood flow to an area. As such, it may be recommended to treat internal bleeding and conditions including:
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia and varicoceles
- Vascular malformations
- Uterine fibroids
Angioplasty and Stent Placement
Angioplasty opens narrowed or blocked arteries, veins, bile ducts, and ureters using a balloon and/or with a stent. Angioplasty may be used to treat:
- Peripheral artery disease
- Portal hypertension
- Pancreas and bile duct disease
- Ureteral strictures
Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty
Both involve the injection of cement to reinforce the spine and reduce pain when severe osteoporosis or a spinal fracture is present.
Sclerotherapy
During this procedure, a solution is injected to treat arteriovenous malformations, some blood vessel tumors, and abnormal veins.
