About Me

I am an ophthalmologist who specializes in the diagnosis and management of medical conditions affecting the retina, including macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, macular edema, and other macular diseases. I believe that no two patients are exactly alike. For each of my patients, I carefully consider exam findings, imaging, and patient needs and preferences to create a customized treatment plan. In addition to patient care, I study the biology, diagnosis and treatment of macular edema, and I am involved in basic laboratory science, ocular imaging analysis and clinical trials of new medications. I think that my time in clinic drives my research and that the insights gained from my research keep me at the cutting edge of diagnosis and treatment strategies for my patients. Outside of work I spend as much time as possible outdoors with my wife and daughter. In whatever time is left I can be found exploring western North Carolina on my mountain bike.

Ratings and Reviews

The Patient Rating score is an average of all responses to care provider related questions on our nationally-recognized Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey. Learn more about our survey process. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the best score. Patients who see some types of providers receive a different version of the patient satisfaction survey. Those results are not available on DukeHealth.org.

Clinical Focus and Research

My Research Interests

My primary research goal is to better understand the causes of and potential treatments for macular edema in hopes of one day finding new treatments for my patients. In addition, I study new ways of using imaging studies to guide treatment approaches customized to each patient. I am also involved in clinical trials of new medications for patients with diabetic macular edema.
