Maternal fetal medicine doctors take a special interest in "high risk" pregnancies. We particularly focus on taking care of women with medical conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. We also take care of women whose pregnancies are complicated by fetal medical complications (for example a fetal genetic condition or birth defect). Our goal is to help a mother achieve the best possible outcome for herself and for her baby; this involves keeping our patients well informed and working with them to come up with an individualized care plan, as well as communicating closely with the pediatric specialists at Duke to coordinate care during and after delivery.
