Neurocognitive Symptoms in Hyperparathyroidism - Clinical Trial

What is the Purpose of this Study?

We are doing this study to learn more about the following symptoms that can be related to primary hyperparathyroidism: confusion, difficulty remembering and focusing, memory fog, changes in a person's normal behavior, feeling "blue", increased anxiety, increased agitation, and trouble performing daily activities, like driving and remembering appointments. We want to know how much these symptoms change in older adults after they have endocrine surgery.

What is the Condition Being Studied?

Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT)

Who Can Participate in the Study?

Adults ages 65+ who:

  • Are diagnosed with PHPT
  • Are scheduled to have an endocrine surgery at Duke

What is Involved?

If you choose to join this study, we will ask you to complete a number of tests related to cognition (brain health). We will follow-up with you six months after surgery to have you repeat these tests to see how your answers have changed. It will take 1-1.5 hours to complete

the tests.
