Duke Pre-Anesthesia Testing Center - Clinic 2D

Open
Type:Duke University Hospital Outpatient Department
Hospital-based clinics are outpatient departments of an individual Duke hospital and have additional facility charges. Some insurance companies process bills with a deductible and coinsurance rather than as a co-pay as for an office visit. This may impact the amount of the bill you are responsible for after payment from your insurance plan. Check with your insurance company before your visit to determine what your responsibility will be.

Experts at the Duke Pre-Anesthesia Testing Center - Clinic 2D are responsible for assessing patients’ readiness for surgery that requires anesthesia. Also known as the PASS (Preoperative Anesthesia and Surgical Screening) clinic, our team of anesthesiologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses evaluate outpatients who are scheduled for a surgery or procedure -- including elective, non-elective, and semi-urgent procedures -- at Duke University Hospital. Our goal is to make your surgical experience as safe as possible.

Your comprehensive preoperative assessment includes a physical exam that helps identify and evaluate medical conditions -- such as anemia, diabetes, nutritional deficiencies, or other conditions -- that could affect how you do during surgery. This may require the following tests:

  • Blood work
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • Penicillin or other allergy testing
  • Sleep apnea assessment
  • Other tests, as appropriate

We will talk with you about your anesthesia options, review the risks and benefits, and tell you what you can expect. We also provide you with specific instructions for how to take your medications on the day of surgery, and how best to manage pain and pain medications after surgery.

To make your surgery and recovery as successful as possible, we can help you quit smoking by connecting you with tobacco cessation services. A licensed social worker can provide cognitive behavioral therapy for people who want to quit smoking and/or who want to improve stress management before surgery. Our registered dietitian can provide nutritional counseling.

Phone and Virtual Care

People who don’t have complex medical conditions or who are at lower risk may be able to complete their pre-anesthesia testing via phone. In certain circumstances, we offer video visits for medically complex patients who meet specific criteria for virtual care.

What You Need to Know Before Your Appointment

Please bring copies of recent records from non-Duke clinics for your providers to review. Examples include pacemaker cards and information, cardiac stent cards and information, echocardiogram reports, stress test reports, laboratory results, etc. You will not need to fast prior to your appointment.

Accepted Insurance

Duke Health contracts with most major health insurance carriers and transplant networks, including the ones listed below. Before scheduling your appointment, we strongly recommend you contact your insurance company to verify that the Duke Health location or provider you plan to visit is included in your network. Your insurance company will also be able to inform you of any co-payments, co–insurances, or deductibles that will be your responsibility. If you proceed in scheduling an appointment and your health insurance benefits do not participate with Duke, your out of pocket liability may be higher. We will contact you regarding your coverage and patient liability. If you are uninsured, learn more about our financial assistance policy.

Preparing For Your Visit

Download a PDF guide that includes information on what to expect during your visit.

Give yourself plenty of time to get to your appointment. Your doctor may ask you to arrive early so that you can have lab tests completed before your examination. Even if this is not the case, we suggest that you should allow about 45 minutes to get to your appointment in addition to your travel time to Durham. This will allow you sufficient time to park, locate the building, get to the particular clinic you're visiting, and register. Duke Clinic is approximately a quarter of a mile from the nearest parking deck. Please note that appointments may be subject to being rescheduled upon late arrivals.

Informal clothing and comfortable shoes are appropriate attire for your visit.

Accessibility Services

We provide equal access for all people and offer a range of free accessibility services to patients and visitors who need them.

Interpreter Services

Free interpreter services can be provided for patients who prefer to communicate in a language other than English.
