About Me
I feel fortunate to work as an attending pediatric cardiac intensivist at Duke, not only because we have the resources available to provide the best care we can imagine for our patients, but also because we each contribute as essential components of a collaborative, productive team of experts every day and night. My compassion and respect for families and patients with heart disease are profound, and quickly establishing trusting, honest rapport with them in the inherently stressful critical care setting has always been my particular strength. Fortunately, our environment of leading edge, forward thinking, and technically skilled cardiology, congenital cardiac surgery, and cardiac critical care allows me to feel confident the care we can provide patients is excellent. On a more personal note, I play classical piano, ride horses, and love math and waveforms of all varieties. I am also learning to bonsai and am a certified kundalini yoga teacher.

Clinical Focus and Research
My path to cardiac critical care began in graduate school, where my research centered on the autonomic nervous system and regulation of cardiorespiratory rhythms. My initial questions, “why does heart rate increase with anxiety,” “how are cardiac rhythms related to feeding behaviors,” and “can we predict sudden death,” have evolved. I currently study how physiologic data can provide crucial information to characterize vulnerabilities in critically ill children so we can predict and prevent adverse outcomes.
