About Me

I have 40 years of experience caring for children and adolescents with endocrine disorders and diabetes. I served for 31 years as Chief of Duke’s Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes. I have played a leading role in the field of clinical pediatric nutrition and diabetes. My colleagues and I were the first to demonstrate the benefits of pharmacotherapy in children and adolescents with pre-diabetes, and we pioneered studies in the pathogenesis and treatment of severe acute malnutrition in the developing world. My colleagues and I were the first to use insulin pumps in infants and toddlers with type 1 diabetes, and we spearheaded the screening of diabetic children for celiac disease. I won Duke’s Golden Apple Award for outstanding teaching and was awarded (continuously since 2001) membership in America’s Top Doctors, sponsored by US News & World Report/Castle Connolly, which includes only 37 pediatric endocrinologists/diabetologists nationwide. I am also included in Best Doctors in America.
