I see patients of all ages who have diagnosed or suspected genetic metabolic disorders - a subset of inherited, genetic conditions that affect the breakdown and processing of nutrients and substances in the body. The build-up or deficiency of these elements can lead to a wide range of problems and severities of disease, and treatment often involves supplemental medications and restricted diets. I have always been interested in sciences and how things work. Genetic counseling enables me to have that focus, while still allowing me to interact with children and families, which is something I truly value. My philosophy when working with families is to meet them where they are, with the full appreciation that different people handle stress and new information very differently. My favorite part of my job is seeing the families rise to their unique challenges and become their own advocates in the face of often challenging diagnoses. I think Duke Health is a great ally for that. We strive to provide the best care possible, while also empowering our families through learning. Outside of my time at work, I love to travel, play soccer, and read.
