Description

The Newborn Care & Safety class is led by Newborn nurses and Childbirth Educators at Duke University and Duke Regional Hospitals. The class is split into two sessions on separate evenings. Each session registration covers you + one guest.

Part 1 of ($25, offered in-person or virtual): In this lecture-style class, learn about the care that your baby will receive in the hospital and how you can care for your baby at home. We'll discuss:

  • The standard care for newborns at Duke University and Duke Regional Hospitals
  • Baby's needs for sleep, play, and feeding
  • Understanding baby's behavior and avoiding over-stimulation
  • Creating a safe and nurturing home environment
  • Preventing common causes of injury to babies in the first year

Part of ($25, offered in-person or virtual): Co-registration with Part 1 required. This interactive workshop will help you practice the skills needed to care for your baby. Bring items from home if you want to learn how to use your own baby gear. Using newborn dolls, we'll practice:

  • Holding and passing baby
  • Feeding, burping, diapering, bathing, dressing, and using the bulb syringe
  • Swaddling and calming baby
  • Positioning baby in your car seat.
  • We'll review first aid, choking rescue, CPR, and common baby-proofing items. There will be plenty of time for Q&A.

If you participate virtually, you'll need to have baby supplies at home for practice, including: a newborn-sized doll or stuffed animal, baby blanket, baby outfit, burp cloth, bulb syringe, diaper, and baby's car seat. Choking rescue and CPR will be review-only, not hands-on.
