United Healthcare Medicare Advantage

September 6, 2024

Our negotiations continue with UnitedHealthcare (United), however, if United does not agree to a fair contract by October 31, 2024, Duke Health will be forced out of network. This means most patients with United insurance plans—including its Medicare Advantage plans (HMO, PPO, and SNP)—may have to pay more out-of-pocket to see their Duke Health doctors and care teams or choose to find a new provider.

As open enrollment for Medicare Advantage approaches, October 15 – December 7, it is important to explore your options to find a plan that meets all your healthcare needs, and includes your doctors and care teams from Duke Health.

In 2025, Duke Health will accept the following Medicare Advantage (MA) insurance plans other than United:

  • Aetna Medicare Advantage (HMO, PPO, and SNP plans)
  • Alignment Health (HMO, PPO, and SNP plans)
  • Blue Medicare (HMO and PPO plans) - Duke HomeCare and Home Infusion does not participate in this plan
  • Cigna Medicare (HMO, PPO, and SNP plans)
  • Experience Health Medicare Advantage (HMO plan)
  • First Carolina Care Medicare Advantage (HMO and PPO plans)
  • Humana Medicare (HMO, PPO, SNP plans) and includes NC State Retirees
  • Liberty Medicare Advantage
  • PruittHealth Premier
  • Troy Medicare (HMO and SNP plans)

If maintaining in-network access to North Carolina’s top hospital system in 2025 is important to you, we encourage you to call your broker to explore your Medicare Advantage plan options during open enrollment. Let them know how important it is for you to maintain in-network access to renowned specialists and your trusted doctors at Duke Health. We also encourage you to connect with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Learn more about Medicare enrollment and how you can change plans at www.cms.gov or call 1-800-633-4227.

Please know that even if Duke Health is forced out-of-network with United starting November 1, 2024, patients always have access to Duke’s emergency care services. In the event of a medical emergency, always call 911 or go to the nearest hospital immediately.
