About Me
I am a gastroenterologist and gastrointestinal cancer geneticist. I diagnose and treat a range of gastrointestinal conditions with endoscopy and colonoscopy. I also perform colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening. As a member of the Hereditary Cancer Clinic, I am interested in helping patients assess their risk for gastrointestinal cancers. I work closely with genetic counselors to review

Clinical Focus and Research
My laboratory is interested in understanding how the cells of the intestine and colon grow in disease states such as inflammation and cancer. I showed that diet-induced obesity increases the growth of intestinal cells and increases the risk of colorectal cancer development. I also developed new ways to study the intestine using three-dimensional tissues (called “organoids”) that are derived from animal models or humans. This work showed that specific cells in colon tumors, called “stem cells”, rapidly divide to promote cancer progression. The long-term goal of our research is to develop new approaches to treat intestinal diseases.
